Students from the Chicago Heights School District 170 Dual Language Program recently celebrated Christmas at "Fiesta Navidena," an event at Garfield School that showcased their talents and abilities.
The students from Garfield, Roosevelt, and Washington-McKinley Schools presented a variety of dances and songs, and participated in fun, educational activities with family and friends.
The event focused on celebrating the holiday in ways that represented the seven native Latino/Hispanic countries from which the students emigrated.
"We were overwhelmed by the positive response to the event," said Shannon Vera, CHSD170's Director of English Language Learners.
"Our program is not only blessed with amazing students, teachers, staff, family, and friends, but with a Board of Education, district administration, and community partners who are incredibly supportive of every aspect of our program."
Vera acknowledged Home Depot, Jones Memorial Center, Los Portales, Los Compadres, Victory Scrap Metal, and the Homewood Heights Baseball Club, as community partners who collaborated with the school district to ensure the success of the event.
"With the ongoing support of our district family and a fabulous cadre of community supporters and volunteers we look forward to hosting many more great events that celebrate culture, community, and family!" she concluded.
