Representatives from St. Xavier University's School of Management and Catholic Charities recently visited Chicago Heights School District 170's Lincoln-Gavin School to provide students with backpacks and school supplies.
Faisal M. Rahman, Ph.D., Professor and Dean of the SXU School of Management, Nick Mancari, SXU's Director of Undergraduate Studies for Business, Corina Salas, SXU Computer Science student, and Leslie Moreira SXU Business student and members of SXU Association for Latino Professionals of America distributed the packages to the students.
Joining the SXU quartet were Christopher L. Torres, Regional Director of Catholic Charities, Carol Peterson, Regional Project Manager of Catholic Charities, and school principal Cara Pastere who also participated in the exercise.
"Activities like this one are vitally important in helping our students to understand the necessity and importance of the business world giving back to society," Dr. Rahman explained.
"The indisputable fact of that dynamic is that society sustains business, and one of the best ways to give back to society is to do whatever is possible to help students in elementary schools."
The donations consisted of 120 backpacks, as well as individual bags of goodies for each student containing hand wipes, Goldfish Crackers, apple sauce tubes, a breakfast bar, and pencils.
Principal Pastere was thankful in praising the efforts of the givers.
"We are most appreciative of the supplies provided our students by the representatives of St. Xavier University and Catholic Charities," she said.
"The supplies definitely will benefit our students' efforts in nurturing their relationship with the world of business while maximizing the learning experience."
